Personalized design is what turns a house into a home, and the same is true in the garden. Selecting structures and garden furniture that enhance your lifestyle and reflect your personality turns a backyard into an oasis. Pamela Anderson's pergola is the perfect example.

The actress took to Instagram to share a picture of herself relaxing on the wooden steps in her garden, and it's absolutely beautiful. In the background, an arched pergola creates the perfect setting for a dining area, complete with four chairs and a table. Small bushes and herbs fill the beds on either side of the walkway, interspersed by small garden lamps.

Pamela's dining area takes inspiration from many of the most beautiful gardens of the past.

Designing a pergola is a versatile staple in many European gardens. 'A pergola is a structure often used in the garden to create a sheltered or shaded space,' explains Mark Holloway, garden furniture expert at Holloways of Ludlow. 'They are often used as additional seating areas, but in some cases are even used for dining or outdoor kitchen areas.'

What are the benefits of building a pergola on a deck?

Mark states: 'Pergolas are the perfect addition to a garden if you’re looking to create zones within the space. The structure works by splitting up the garden into different use areas, just as we do in the home. Not only are pergolas used for functionality, they are also a great way to add an area of interest to your garden with an aesthetically pleasing and elevated look.'

Furthermore, Pamela's design is slated to become one of the biggest garden trends for summer 2025. Pinterest data shows a 40% increase in searches for pergola decorating ideas over the past month.

'The popularity of pergolas has grown significantly over recent years,' Mark tells Homes & Gardens. This is for several reasons, one of which is that they offer a shelter from the elements, whether that be rain or sun, a pergola allows you to use your garden no matter what the weather.'

Using a pergola for privacy planting is another reason that these structures are growing in popularity. Mark states: 'A pergola also offers privacy in gardens which are overlooked. The shelter provided by the pergola not only protects from the weather but also onlookers, giving you privacy from neighbours and passersby.'

Aside from the practical benefits, pergola roofs are trending for their timeless aesthetic appeal.

Mark explains: 'Pergolas are a great way to add a chic, European feel to your garden, which is perfect ahead of the Summer months. Adding a pergola to your garden will also give it a more luxurious feel, elevating the space and transforming it into an outdoor space perfect to relax and unwind in.'

Luckily, installing a pergola in your own yard (and avoiding pergola mistakes) is easier than it appears.

Mark advises: 'To create a space that instantly transforms you to an Italian veranda, stick to neutral shades of cream, whites, browns and green, focusing on keeping it feeling bright and airy. Add greenery with plants to bring together the look of the space and keep it feeling calming and fresh.'

For a more maximalist scheme, you can brighten the look with the right outdoor furniture.

If you want to give your garden an eye-catching and colorful look, a pergola is the perfect space to incorporate the maximalist trend. 'Bright pops of color with pink, yellow, orange, blue, and green work great in this space. Utilise a mix of colours through the furniture, rugs, and other accessories you choose to guarantee a welcoming, cozy, and striking space.'

If Pamela Anderson is doing it, it's good enough for us. Pergolas are the yard-defining trend we are most looking forward to this summer.
